The Sami population is divided into eight Sami villages and the economic basis is the breeding of reindeer. Obviously the Sami culture is very much dependant on an unspoilt natural environment. This is one side of the coin – fresh air, clean water, a diverse wildlife and an attractive and healthy environment that is well worth being preserved.
There were Sami people, who were hunters, fishermen and reindeer herders, but it took a while until the region became more “civilized”. In the late 15th century, and then in the 16th century, the region had a better connection to Sweden (though the Finnish also had quite an influence on the region), and a stone church was built.

Jämtland Härjedalen has a distinctive identity, partly due to it forming part of Sápmi, the land of Sweden’s indigenous people, the Sami, whose inherently sustainable lifestyle centres on reindeer herding. Much of the region’s history and culture is documented at Östersund’s Jamtli Museum.

Objectives. To investigate the experience of suicidal expressions (death wishes, life weariness, ideation, plans and attempts) in young Swedish Sami, their attitudes toward suicide (ATTS), and expe of young Swedish Sami reported experiences of ethnicity-related maltreatment by others, and by teachers, which were associated with negative health outcomes (2).
